O.C. shaken by 4.5 quake in San Bernardino
January 8th, 2009, 7:57 pm · 169 Comments · posted by Gary Robbins, science writer-editor

magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit near downtown San Bernardino at 7:49 p.m., shaking much of Southern California, including all of Orange County. The USGS map indicates that the quake broke along the San Jacinto fault system, which is capable of producing a catastrophic quake. A 3.3 aftershock occurred at 8:47 p.m. Further aftershocks are expected. Click on the locator map to enlarge it.

The quake was originally reported to be 5.0 in magnitude, but was lowered to 4.5 after a review by government seismologists.

The quake was felt as twin jolts in Trabuco Canyon and Irvine but produced a gentle rolling motion in parts of Huntington Beach, Huntington Harbour and Santa Ana. Residents reported a variety of motions in Orange and other parts of Orange County. In Laguna Beach, the quake rattle windows. Further east, in Riverside, cups jiggled in cabinets.

Residents report feeling the quake as far away as San Diego, Lancaster and Santa Barbara. By 9:30 p.m., 92 people in Laguna Woods had filled out the USGS’ “Did you feel it?” form on the Internet. More than 60 did the same in Trabuco Canyon, as did 200 in Irvine.

“It felt like a small jolt and then it rolled for about three to four seconds,” said Orange County Register reporter Erin Welch at a meeting of the Yorba Linda Water District board at headquarters in Placentia. “Everyone went whoa, everyone stopped for a second. It definitely paused the meeting.”

Reader Kathleen Kreiger said by email, “I live in Mission Viejo near Alicia and Marguerite. It woke me up. I felt 4 gentile ’shakes’ as opposed to a rolling feeling. No noise, no nothing. I even wondering if I dreamt it. ”

An online reader known only as Kelly said, “Didn’t feel it in Costa Mesa but got a text from my Mom in the IE saying “Wow, you ok?” that had me puzzled for a few seconds. They had glasses rattling in the cupboard in Riverside :0)”

Then there was this:

“I was sitting in my office in Orange when it hit … I felt a slight jolt and then a rolling effect, then I realized it was an earthquake. It lasted about 5-6 seconds. I have been in so many that I knew it wasn’t the Big One. My name is Darrell Olson. I am a professional Break-Dancer from Orange.”
